Van Lom, Isabel Madison 1917-2008

Isabel Madison Van Lom died at Providence St.
Vincent's Hospital on Feb. 22, 2008 at age 90.
A memorial Mass will be said at St. Cecilia Catholic
Church, 5th and Franklin Street, Beaverton, at 11 a.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 27. Recitation of the holy rosary
precedes the Mass at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers,
the family suggests remembrances to the charity of
your choice.
Isabel Van Lom was born on a farm near Crystal City,
Mo., on Nov. 8, 1917, the fifth of six children of
William Thomas and Marie Garbarino Madison.
She worked as a secretary for Pittsburgh Plate Glass.
She was a pilot, and during World War II ferried
planes for the Army Air Corps as a WASP (Women
Airforce Service Pilot) from February 1943 through
1944. After her group disbanded, she worked as a
flight instructor at Stephens College, Columbia, Mo.,
and Oregon State University, Corvallis, until her
marriage to Gerald E. Van Lom in 1949. While in the
Beaverton/Portland area she worked for Tektronix in
the service department.
The couple had five children. Survivors are children,
Christine Florendo, Juneau, Alaska; William M. Van
Lom, Portland; Richard G. Van Lom, Peoria, Ariz.; and
Gretchen Van Lom, Seattle; three grandchildren and one
great-grandchild. Her son, Charles E. Van Lom,
preceded her in death in 1995 and her husband in 1998.
