Marie E. SULLIVAN

Marie Elizabeth Giessing Sullivan, beloved mother of Kent and Keith, passed away on
December 6, 2003 in Durham, North Carolina. Marie was the widow of Joseph Patrick
Sullivan, an attorney who served in the FBI during World War II and later was Chief
Labor Negotiator for Standard Oil Company. Marie was born in St. Louis, Missouri on
December 7, 1911 and graduated from Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia. She raised her
family in the South and Midwest and retired to the Pacific Northwest in 1972. She had
a life-long passion for art, antiques, interior decorating and gardening. In addition to
creating a lovely home and caring for her family, she pursued many of these interests
through her active membership in the Seattle Women's University Club and the Seattle
Opera Guild. After her two sons were grown, she developed her wonderful talent for
impressionist oil painting and her enthusiasm for art and beauty has been passed on to
her grandchildren in enduring and endearing ways. She is survived by her two sons, Dr.
Kent Sullivan and his wife Sandee Sullivan and their children, Bruce and his wife Beth,
Brian, Shawn, Susan, Jennifer and Kevin; and by Dr. Keith Sullivan and his wife Dr.
Kristine Sullivan and their children, Laura, Melissa and Peter. Marie has two great
grandchildren, Asher and Madeline. A private graveside service will be held in Seattle,
Washington at the Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home on December 12, 2003.
Visitation will be on December 11 from Noon to 8:00 p.m. For the past five years Marie
Sullivan has lived in Durham, North Carolina to be near Keith and Kristine who are with
Duke University. A Memorial Service will be held on December 15 at 2 p.m. at the Mt.
Bethel United Methodist Church in Bahama, North Carolina. In lieu of flowers, the family
suggests that memorial contributions may be made to the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, c/o
