Elizabeth "Betty" Smalley

Elizabeth Frances Smalley was born to Katie and Nicholas Berticevich
on July 1, 1923, in San Jose, California. She died at her home
peacefully in her sleep on April 15, 2000. Betty never met a stranger
and her greatest joy was her family and friends. In her early years, she
worked as a waitress for a family-owned restaurant, in the Defense
industry, and as a switchboard operator. She met her husband,
Freeman Smalley, at a USO dance and they married February 16,
1952. While her husband was in the Army, they lived in California,
Alaska, Germany, and settled in Washington state. She was a 40-year
resident of Lakewood and a parishioner of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic
Church. She retired in 1992 after working 15 years at the Lakewood
Library. Betty is survived by her husband, Freeman; daughters
Katherine Smalley of Memphis, TN; Joan Thornhill of Edgewood, WA;
Ann Langevin and husband Mike of West Richland, WA; son Mark
and wife Trish of Roseburg, OR; grandchildren Colleen, Neil, Michelle,
Thomas, Nicole and Laura; niece Janice Craig and brother-in-law
Louis Grillo. She was preceded in death by her sister Winnie Grillo, and
her son-in-law Mike Thornhill. A memorial service will be held at St.
Frances Cabrini Catholic Church at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, April
19th. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the New
Church Fund at St. Frances Cabrini. Pub Date: 4/18/2000
