Joan Harris SAVIDGE

Died peacefully on August 27, 2007 after a long
illness with Alzheimer's. Born in Joplin, Missouri in
March 1928, she moved with her family to Seattle in
the 1940's and attended Roosevelt High School. She
studied at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri and
graduated from the University of Washington in 1950
with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. While at
the UW she joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority where
she met many of her lifelong friends and was crowned
Homecoming Queen. Joan moved to New York City and
worked as a stewardess for United Airlines for two
years. In 1954 she married Seattle car dealer, Samuel
L. Savidge, Jr. Joan developed many interests and
passions, ranging from art history and politics to
astrology and yoga, as well as devoting herself to
community patronage and activism. An environmentalist,
she helped organize efforts to prevent the building of
large grain terminals on Seattle's waterfront. She was
passionate about art and volunteered as a docent at
the Seattle Art Museum. Joan was affiliated with
numerous organizations, including The Sunset Club,
Seattle Tennis Club, and Children's Hospital
Orthopedic Guild. She will be remembered by her many
friends for her gracious manner and lovely smile. Joan
is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Samuel
L. Savidge, Jr.; three children, S. Leigh Savidge, III
of Los Angeles, T. Blair Savidge (Janice) and Sarah
Savidge of Seattle; sister, Betty Harris of Joplin,
Missouri and brother, John Harris of Tulsa, Oklahoma;
and two grandchildren, Emily and Austin. She was
preceded in death by daughter, Ann Taylor Savidge in
1958. Joan's family would like to extend special
thanks to caregivers, Jackie, Sherry, Bert and Zanni
for all their loving years of care. A Memorial Service
will be held at the Church of the Ascension in
Magnolia on Wednesday, September 5, 2007 at 2:00 p.m.,
located at 2330 Viewmont Way West. Remembrances may be
made to the Church of the Ascension.
