Mary Elizabeth (Baschon) PHAIR

Passed away peacefully on August 20th, 2003. Born in Hawley, PA. on
September 7, 1914, she received her B.A. degree from Jersey City State
College and attended graduate school at Columbia University. Married 55
years to Capt. James F. Phair (U.S.C.G.) who preceded her in death. Survived
by her five children, James F. (Fremont, CA.), Joseph B. (San Francisco,
CA.), Maribeth (Bothell, WA.), Michele (San Rafael, CA.), and Patrick E.
(Napa, CA.) and her ten loving grand- children, Lara, James, Donald, Krista,
Kimberly, Kelly, Joseph, Sean, Caitlin and Gwendolyn. Military life brought
numerous moves throughout the country where she always became an active
member of her church and community. She and Jim retired in Shoreline, WA.
Mary, who loved teaching, especially reading, started teaching in the N.Y.
Public Schools, and later taught at St. Luke (Shoreline) and St. Joseph
(Seattle) Schools. Mary was a Scouting volunteer for 50 years, working with
Scouts including as a leader for several Cub Packs and Brownie Troops, merit
badge and religious awards counselor, and a member of the Catholic
Committee on Scouting. She received recognition as Scouter of the Year
(Shoreline District) and the St. George Emblem (Seattle Archdiocese). Her
extensive volunteer activities included work with the Sunshine Guild for
Retarded Children, Servicemen's Y.M.C.A., Orton Society and vocational
skills teacher for non-English speaking immigrants. She was named Coast
Guard Wife of the Year (13th Coast Guard District). She enjoyed knitting,
sewing, cooking, hospitality that she graciously shared with the needy of the
communities in which she lived. Vigil will be held Wednesday, August 27,
2003, 7 p.m. at St. Luke Catholic Church, 322 - N. 175th St., Shoreline.
Funeral Mass will be said Thursday, August 28, 10:30 a.m. at the church.
Memorials may be made to St. Vincent de Paul, Boy Scouts, or charity of your
