Muriel Byers Peterson
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, 2000, in Westminster
Presbyterian Church for Muriel Byers Peterson, who died Sept. 4 at age 78. Mrs.
Peterson was born May 9, 1922, in Los Angeles. Her maiden name was Anderson. She
graduated from UCLA and received a master's degree from San Francisco Theological
Seminary. From 1947 to 1952, she was a missionary to Brazil.
She lived in California in Red Bluff, Vallejo and Berkeley; in Monterrey, Mexico; Kansas
City, Kan., and Sedro Wooley, Wash., before moving to Portland in 1967. She was a
homemaker and a member of the church. In 1947, she married the Rev. Laurence P.
Byers, who was senior pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church from 1967 to 1975;
he died in 1992. In about 1994, she married the Rev. Donald J. Peterson, a former
pastor of Moreland Presbyterian Church and Lake Grove Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband; daughters, Helen Byers and Laurie Byers; son, Douglas
Byers; stepdaughters, Peggy Stidd, Ruth Peterson-Morrow and Patti Sjolin; stepson,
Rev. David Peterson; brother, Arl Anderson; and two grandchildren.
Disposition is by cremation. The family suggests remembrances to the Alzheimer's
Association. Arrangements are by Portland Funeral Alternatives.
