Gene N. Metcalf

Passed away November 17, 2008 in Orting, Washington. Gene was born October 6,
1920 to Clarence Arthur Metcalf and Lena Mae Williford in Hale, Carroll County,
Missouri. His father died suddenly when Gene was 10 years of age, and Gene was
sent to live with neighbors Marlin and Tina Cumbo. The Cumbos later moved with Gene
to Gresham, Oregon. Upon graduation from Gresham High School, Gene joined the
CCC, working on various projects in Oregon and Washington. He joined the Army Air
Corps in 1940. While stationed near Salina, Kansas, he met and married Carolyn
Elizabeth Chapman September 13, 1942. They had four children. Gene proudly served
in what was to become the U.S. Air Force for 22 years, serving with the 483rd (red tail)
Bomb Group in South America, North Africa, and Italy during WWII, and in South Korea
during the Korean Conflict. Upon retirement from the Air Force in 1962, Gene went to
work for Reynolds Aluminum in Troutdale, Oregon as a shift foreman on a pot line. He
and Carol moved to Quebec, Canada for a year’s assignment for Reynolds. He retired
when the plant was downsized. Upon retirement, he went to work for a chemical
company, working in New York State and Louisiana. When he and Carol finally retired,
they located to various locations in Washington State. Gene was preceded in death by
Carolyn, his wife of 64 years, his brother Jake, a sister, Elaine, and daughters Carolyn
Jean and Nancy Lee Rogers. He is survived by his son Ronnie (Echo) of Salt Lake
City, Utah, and daughter Bonita “Bonnie” (Roger) Wilson of Kennewick, Washington,
seven grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held
Satuday, November 29, 2008 at Rainier View Christian Church, 12305 Spanaway Loop
Rd., Tacoma at 1:00pm, reception to follow. Interment at Tahoma National Cemetery in
Kent, WA.
