MENTEER, Roy Milton

Born September 28, 1917, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, to Edwin Garfield Menteer and
Verna Pearl Potter, Roy died 7AM, Monday, September 8, 2007 at The Gardens on
University nursing home, Spokane, Washington. Roy was 91 years old. With him in his
final days were his children, Lisa, Craig, Jeff and Tamara. Roy's other daughters, Terry,
and Karen, were present in their prayers and thoughts. He was a man of strong
principles and strong hands. Roy lives on in the memory of his children when they find
themselves repeating his pithy maxims "Mind over matter", "Keep your chin up", " You
are what you put in your mouth." His strong hands and creative mind made many things
for the family, from furniture to parade floats to additional bedrooms. As an active
member of the Spokane community he was a Rotarian, an Elk, able-bodied supporter
of the Boy Scouts, and served as treasurer at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church/Spokane
during the 1956 expansion. Raised on a small farm in rural Pennsylvania, Roy attended
a one-room school until the age of 15, when he left the family farm to travel to the West
Coast, taxiing an acquaintance's car across the nation. Once on the West Coast, Roy
got a job in the woods and remained in the lumber industry most of his adult life. Roy
served as a flying instructor in the air force, during World War II. He loved this job, and
likely would have remained a pilot if it weren't for the fact that he had to cheat the eye
chart to get into the air force. After the war he returned to logging in Oregon, where he
ran a crew near Eugene. He married (Myra) Ellen Carll of Los Angeles, California, after
meeting and courting her for several years during his air force tour of duty. Roy and
Ellen lived in lumber camps in northern California and southern Oregon for six years
birthing three children before moving to Spokane, where they welcomed the arrival of
two more.

Ever one to move forward Roy banked on his knowledge of the timber industry and
opened business in Spokane as a lumber broker. During these years, Roy enjoyed
running his business, playing handball, golfing, camping, skiing, fishing and hunting. An
avid woodsman he shared his interests with his children, particularly his sons, whom he
taught to hunt and fish. Parenting was a priority for him. He taught all his children to be
self-sufficient, disciplined, and honest people. A second marriage to Jessie Petty in the
mid-70s brought four more sons into the family. Roy is survived by five children with his
first wife, Ellen and twelve grandchildren: Terry Watkins (Dak, Jamie, Mick), Craig
Menteer (Peter, Amelia), Jeff Menteer (Rory, Danielle), Tamara Menteer Gonzalez
(Pierce, Blake), and Lisa Daley (Ian, Evan, Aaron) and another daughter, Karen Mix.
Roy was a good decent man with strong morals and unbeatable self-discipline who
taught his children to fly high in pursuit of their interests, persevere through hardship
and "maintain a positive attitude". He will live on in the ideals and achievements of his
progeny. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 11, 2008, between 9:00 am
and 5:00 pm., followed by funeral services Friday, September 12, 2008, at 2:00 pm, at
the Alwin Chapel at HAZEN & JAEGER FUNERAL HOME, 1306 N. MONROE,
SPOKANE, WA.
