| Stephen Edward Koran, 86, of Woodway, Washington, died peacefully on May 2, 2005, at Overlake Hospital, Bellevue. |
| He was born to Stephen Koran and Helen A. Davies Koran in Sharon, Pennsylvania, September 30, 1918. After attaining his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University in 1940, he received a commission to serve as an officer in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. While stationed at his first assignment in Tampa, Florida, he met and fell in love with Mary Virginia LaMotte, and not long after they married, in November, 1941. |
| He fought with the 933rd Engineers Aviation Regiment throughout the Northern Pacific Theater in World War II, in the Aleutians, the Marianas and Ryukyus Campaigns, and was honorably discharged in 1946, at the rank of captain. |
| After the war he and his wife settled in the Pacific Northwest, where they built their first and only home in 1948, and raised their family. Over the next 37 years, he worked as a mechanical engineer, specializing in heating and cooling systems. He was active in and became a life member of both the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). He retired from the engineering firm of Bouillon, Christofferson & Schairer in 1984. |
| He was a Freemason (Scottish Rite), a Shriner (Nile Temple) and an active member of the Nile Shrine Golf Club, serving as President in 1987. |
| He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Virginia; his four sons, William Stephen (College Station, Texas), James Duncan (Sedro Woolley, Washington), Thomas Noel (Evanston, Illinois) and David Matthew (Woodway, Washington); seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. |
| Family graveside services were held Friday at Restlawn Memorial Park of Edmonds. A public memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 29, at the Nile Shrine Center, 6601 244th Street SW, Mountlake Terrace, (Potentate's Lounge). |
