Tom Kanelis
A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2001, in Holy Trinity Greek
Orthodox Church in Portland for Tom Kanelis, who died June 28 at age 78.
Mr. Kanelis was born April 28, 1923, in New Kensington, Pa. He moved to
Portland in 1937 and graduated from Jefferson High School. He served in
the U.S. Army for 28 years, retiring as a colonel in 1970. He served during
World War II and the Korean War and was awarded the Bronze Star. He
also received a master's degree in education from American University in
Washington, D.C. He moved to Vancouver, Wash., in 1991. In 1943, he
married Verna L. Schuerch.
Survivors include his wife; daughter, Karen K. Prince; sisters, Eileen
Tsohonis, Alice Holbrook, Elizabeth Kanelis and Sophia Runyard; brother,
Constantine Kanelis; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Interment in Willamette National Cemetery. Remembrances to a
wheelchair ramp fund at the church. Arrangements by Hamilton-Mylan in
Vancouver.
