JOHNSON, VIOLA RUTH NUCHIMS

Viola Johnson, 95, formerly of Detroit and Delton,
Mich., was born to Leon and Rose Gray Feb. 26, 1911,
in Philadelphia. She died Nov. 4, 2006. After living
most of her life in Michigan, she moved to Portland in
1999 to be closer to family and to join the retirement
community at Holgate Center. She was a retired
schoolteacher, volunteer, and supporter of progressive
political causes. Her eternal optimism, curiosity, and
passions for National Public Radio and healthy living
probably contributed to her longevity. Her second
husband Raymond Johnson died in 1974. In addition to
numerous friends and relatives, she is survived by her
son, Paul Nuchims of Port Orchard, Wash.; daughter,
Mira Nuchims Rodwan of Cincinnati; son, David Johnson
(Kathy) of Portland; six grandchildren; and four
great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life was
held at Holgate Center, Odd Fellows Retirement
Community on Nov. 12, 2006. Remembrances to Southern
Poverty Law Center. 400 Washington Ave, Montgomery, AL
36104. Arrangements by Emily's Cremation.
