William Henry HARBOLD

Born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1921, died in Seattle
February 16, 2008. He was a Professor Emeritus of
Political Science at Whitman College where he taught
for 13 years. He previously had taught at the
University of Washington for 20 years. He served in
the U.S. Army during World War II and then earned his
B.A. at Penn State and his PhD at Harvard University.
Prof. Harbold was a Fullbright Scholar, co-author of a
widely used college text book, Modern Government, an
Editor of The Western Political Quarterly and served
as President of the Pacific Northwest Political
Science Association. He was also a Danforth Fellow.
For several years after retiring, he had a studio in
Pioneer Square where he worked on the conservation and
restoration of works of art on paper. He loved playing
golf, listening to classical music, and sipping his
favorite single-malt scotch, Laphroaig. He is survived
by his wife of 57 years, Mary Jo; a daughter, Ellen
Ostheller, son-in-law David and two granddaughters,
Mariah and Molly Ostheller, all of Spokane; his
sister, Carol Barnett and brother-in-law Charles of
Colorado Springs; and several nieces and nephews.
