The Rev. John 'Anthony' Gussin
A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, in St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Vernonia for the Rev. John "Anthony" Gussin, who died
Feb. 19 at age 85.
The Rev. Gussin was born Nov. 20, 1915, in Kansas City, Mo. During
World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Forces in Europe and was
held a prisoner of war for 18 months. He was a CPA and supervisor for
Mack Truck in Los Angeles for about 20 years. In the 1960s, he entered
Mount Angel Seminary and was ordained. He was a parish priest for St.
Fredric Catholic Church in St. Helens and then St. Mary's Catholic Church
in Vernonia. In 1976, he moved to Spokane and was a chaplain. He served
at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Lebanon in Ohio. He later served in a
monastery and was a hermit in Beirut, Lebanon. After returning to the
United States, he established a prayer house in Eagle, Idaho, helped
parishes and was chaplain for a Catholic Workers' group in Boise.
Survivors include his sister, Sister Albina.
Interment is in Mt. Calvary Catholic Cemetery. The family suggests
remembrances to the Congregation of St. Joseph, Sisters of Carondelet,
St. Louis Province, 6400 Minnesota Ave., St. Louis, MO 63111.
