Ruth J. CHINN

Age 92, passed away peacefully on Oct. 21st, 2007 at
her home in Seattle, WA. She was born on Dec. 14, 1914
in Los Angeles, CA. She attended Ling Nan University
in Canton, China where she met her future husband,
Robert Chinn (deceased 1984) of Seattle, Washington.
Ruth and Robert were married on Nov. 20th, 1935. She
raised 3 children - Karen (David Wong), Valerie (John
Hom) and Derek. She worked for the Chinese Consulate
General, Ding How Restaurant in Burien and owned the
Career Girl dress shop. Ruth was a very active
volunteer as a Girl Scouts Leader, founder and first
president of the Jade Guild, Gatzert elementary and
Washington middle school PTA president, Oak Tin
Women's Auxiliary, Chong Wah Benevolent Association.
She served on the board of Kin On, YWCA, Chinese
Baptist Church, Wing Luke Museum, ACT Theatre and
Chair woman of the Robert Chinn Founda tion. In 1960,
Ruth helped her husband open United Savings and Loan,
the first Asian owned bank in the United States. She
eventually served on the board of directors there, and
then co- founded the Asian Resource Center in the mid
90's. The Resource Center has been a cultural,
community oriented, educational, recreational place in
the International District. Ruth is survived by her
three chil dren, 5 grandchildren - Letitia Fong,
Patrick Hom, Mark Hom, Jonady Sun and Kristen Mar, and
4 great- grandchildren, Arascena Fong, Remington Fong,
Caroline Sun and Brandon Sun, and many other nieces
and nephews. She is also survived by her brother,
Albert Jung of Los Angeles and sister-in-law, Amy Hong
of Oakland, CA. Ruth lived a full complete life with
integrity, compassion and a strong commitment to her
family, commu nity and God. She made many life long
friends past and present, and will be missed by all.
There will be a Gravesite Service at Evergreen
Washelli, Friday, Oct. 26th, 2007 at noon. The family
requests remembrances to the Robert Chinn Foundation -
PO Box 14084, Seattle, WA 98114 - in memory of Ruth
Chinn.
