| Norman E. BERG January 5, 1924 - July 6, 2003 Norman E. Berg, 79, long time Seattle business owner passed away July 6, 2003 after a long battle with cancer. His career included general contracting, subcontracting, property development and various investments. He was born January 5, 1924 in San Francisco, California, to immigrant parents Chris Berg and Anna Bergvall. As a young teenager he moved with his father to Seattle where he graduated from Queen Anne High School before enlisting in the Army Air Corps where he completed the cadet training program for twin engine combat cargo duty. He was based in the China Burma India Theater for a year flying combat cargo, dropping paratroopers, supplies and equipment to the British, the Nationalist Chinese and the American armies. His efforts helped to open the Ledo Road from Burma into China. He served with distinction, decorated DFC, Air Medal, Presidential Citation, Order of the Flying Cross, which was presented personally by General Chang Chi Chek. Upon honorable discharge from the Air Corps, he enrolled in the U of W. After graduating from the University of Washington Norman joined his father in operating Chris Berg, Inc., a Seattle- based general contracting firm. His contracting career included projects in Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, North Dakota, the Philippines, Guam, Yap Island, Palau, Ponape, Koror, Babelthorp, Pellilou and Saipan for which he received various awards from the U.S Navy and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He also founded numerous other enterprise including Berg Plastering, Berg's Marina Audio Acoustics, Inc., Pacific Ocean Properties, Argonaut Properties, Inc. Mr. Berg was involved in many civic activities and made ongoing contributions to charitable organizations. Beginning in 1948 Mr. Berg made his yacht Valkyrie available to the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department for use as the Christmas Ship, beginning the tradition of the yachts cruising the waters of Seattle with Christmas decorations and carolers. His memberships include the Sons of Norway, the Masonic Order of Free Masonry, the Shrine Nile Temple of Seattle, Swedish Hospital Summit Club, the Washington Athletic Club and the Pilots Class of 1944. He is survived by his wife Marjorie C. Berg; daughters Janice M. and Karin L. Berg; stepdaughters Cindy Shrieve and Lori Weintraub; sister Betty Lou Anderson; half brothers Kimberly J. and Knute Berg and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
