Mary Glendine Carter BEACH Age 84, August 18, 2008. Born in Seattle, February 24, 1924 to Alfred and Nellie Rudd Carter, Mary attended Lafayette Grade School, James Madison Jr. High and graduated from Roosevelt High School. She married the love of her life, Allen Edwards Beach, a '38 graduate of Lincoln H.S. and UW student, at the University Baptist Church in December of '42. Mary and Allen started their 64 year marriage in Ann Arbor Michigan where Mary worked in the office of the Judge Advocate General as a typist and proof reader while Allen undertook intensive Japanese language study with the first US Army Special Military Intelligence group at the University of Michigan. After her husband's return from WW II service in the Pacific, Mary devoted her life to raising two daughters and holding down the fort while Allen's career took him to Japan and South East Asia as manager of U.S. trade fairs. She also dedicated her efforts to advocating for citizens with developmental disabilities as a parent of a profoundly retarded child. She served as Vice President of the Women's Auxiliary of WARC, Seattle (now ARC of Washington). In the 1960's she was instrumental in organizing the Women's Auxiliary for the Long Island, New York Chapter of ARC and was its first President. She and Allen werelong-time supporters of Friends of Fircrest, Action DD, VOR (Voice of the Retarded) organizations upholding state residential care choices. Mary accompanied her husband on extended assignments managing U.S. Pavilions at International Expositions in Japan, Belgium, New York, Okinawa, Canada, Knoxville, Brisbane, Vancouver, B.C., Montreal, Seattle and other assignments around the world. Her outgoing personality, lively humor and fun nature endeared her to all she met. The life of the party, she was able to engage with people from many cultures with laughter, warmth and good will. Mary is preceded in death by her husband, Allen (Sept.'05) and sister, Una Carter Christensen, sister in law, Doris Beach Adams. She is survived by daughters Candace Braley, Carolyn Beach, grandson Edward Allen Braley, nephew Guy D. Adams, brother in-law Richard Adams. Her family is grateful to the staff at the Hearthstone Health Center for their kind care. At her request there will be no funeral. Private internment, arranged by Kosec Funeral Home, will be at Laurel Grove Cemetery, Port Townsend, WA.
