Gonzales, Bernardino Calizo A longtime resident of Anchorage, Bernardino Calizo Gonzales, 89, died Aug. 7, 2010, at home of natural causes. Relatives and friends are welcome to a visitation from 1-3 p.m. today at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St., followed by a prayer service. A funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. Father Vincent Blanco will officiate the visitation and funeral. Attendees to the funeral must meet at the Fort Richardson main gate at 9:45 a.m. for a military escort. Mr. Gonzales was born May 21, 1921, in the Philippines. He graduated with an associate's degree in radio and communications and worked later as a radio operator for the Philippine Postal Service in Manila and the Philippines/U.S Naval Base in Sangley Point, Cavite. He was a soldier of the U.S. Army and member of the U.S. armed forces in the Philippines during World War II, a POW who survived the Bataan Death March. After the war, he pursued his profession in Itogon-Suyoc Mines, a large mining company in Benguet, Philippines, until he retired in 1972. Soon after retirement, he joined the Merchant Marine, serving both local and international shipping companies prior to immigrating to the United States in 1981. He had since resided in Anchorage. Here, he worked as a school volunteer, where he helped Asian students cope with the curriculum requirements. He was a friend to many and enjoyed reading and sharing stories with others. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Florante and Elena, Rolly and Tessie, Ben and Lourdes, Romy and Helen, Roel and Allyn and Yoly Gonzales of Anchorage; grandchildren, Orlando and Heather, Christian, Norman, Romina, Allen, Kristine, Brent, Krisalynn and Erika Gonzales, of Anchorage, Ronald and Valerie of California, Roma Gonzales and Jenny Ancheta of Redmond, Wash., Evaflor and John Vinoya, Rosario, Vincent, Reina Marie, Kristine and Michael John Gonzales of the Philippines; and great- grandchildren, Anthony and Alyssa Gonzales of Eagle River, Caindael and Calista Gonzales of California, Jasmine, Jozlynn and Tristan Ancheta of Redmond, Wash., and Sean, Ian Gonzales, and Angeline Vinoya of the Philippines. Mr. Gonzales was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita; son, Melchor; and grandchildren, Michael Eric Gonzales and Ryan Anthony Gonzales.
