McEnany, Janet Mortland 81 03/06/1929 08/09/2010 Janet Mortland was born and raised on Queen Anne Hill in Seattle. She was the middle of three girls and while her childhood was not idyllic, it shaped her into the sweet, generous woman she was to become. She left Seattle with her sister Joanne to attend Linfield College where she met her future husband, Robert McEnany. They were "fixed up" on that first date and played tennis - probably the one and only time Mom played! They married in 1953 and Mom quickly settled into the cherished role of being a mother. She would often remark that "the best years of her life were when she was raising her kids." She loved having our friends around and hearing about their lives and was a wonderful listener. She never missed a track meet or choral performance, and was unwavering in her support and love. Mom loved the holidays, any holiday, and decorated the house for them all. A favorite memory of ours is being awakened for school in December, not by an alarm clock, but by Christmas music playing on the stereo. After successfully raising three kids, Mom embarked on the second chapter of her life. She traveled extensively, proudly stating that she had traveled to every continent but Antarctica. Never a passive observer on these trips, she rode camels in Egypt, camped in tree tops in Kenya, and was on the ship's deck at 4:30 a.m. when it passed through the Panama Canal. Never mind that she was at the wrong end! Bridge was another passion of hers during this time and, more than the game itself, she enjoyed the many dear friends she met while playing. It saddened her greatly when, in her later years, she had to give it up as her memory failed her. Most important to her during this time, was being a grandma to her four grandchildren. She was never one to sit on the couch and watch. Instead, she would get down on the floor, tell stories and play games. She always picked out the perfect gift for Christmas and birthdays and made each grandchild feel as if they were the most special. Devoted wife and mother, adoring grandmother, gracious, loyal, and fun-loving friend, volunteer, lover of cats and bridge - that was our mom. We miss her greatly. Jan is survived by Robert McEnany; children, David (Becky), Debbie, and Diane (Michael); grandchildren, Jamie and Grant Keller, and Jennie and Emily McEnany; sister, Joanne Whittier; countless loved ones; friends; and Middie, her cat! She was predeceased by her sister, Mary. Per Mom's wishes, there will be no service. Remembrances to the Oregon Humane Society. Published in The Oregonian
