Horner, Stanley Lynn (Age 94) Passed away July 2, 2010 at Spokane, WA. Stanley L. Horner was born April 17, 1916 at Tekoa, WA to Frank S. and Clara G. (Burger) Horner. He attended schools in Tekoa and graduated from Tekoa High School in 1934. Stan married Lois Hench, his high school sweetheart, June 2, 1937 at the Tekoa Methodist Church in Tekoa. Stan and Lois celebrated their 73rd Anniversary on June 2, 2010. In Stan's early years he worked at the Maple Service Station in Tekoa, WA and was a partner with David Akers for two years. Stan also had a mail route in DeSmet and Tensed for two years and also delivered groceries along with the mail. At the age of 24 in 1940 Stan hired out on the Union Pacific Railroad as a brakeman and later on as a conductor until November 1976 when he retired. Stan went 36 years on the railroad without an accident. After retiring, Stan became a mentor to many of the young railroaders to help them get started "on the right track". Stan and Lois lived 32 years in Tekoa and then moved to Bayview, ID where he built a home in 1965. Stan fished everyday and canned and smoked blue backs for the winter. Stan began going to Lake Pend Oreille in the early 1950's and built a rounded-front boat that slept four. He built it in his Tekoa home basement and then had to figure out how to get it out! He later moved up to a 21' fishing boat. In the early 1960's Stan was an avid hunter with Dave Cohn, Jack Kramer, Bruce Nearing, Joe and Leon Wolfe, Judy Cohn and others, and they always came home with deer and elk. After living at their lake home for 38 years Stan moved to Harbor Crest in June of 2006. Stan was very proud up until his fall on June 17th that he never had to walk with a cane or walker and told Vicki this every week as he walked her out to the car. Stan and Lois also wintered 17 years in Mesa, AZ. Stan was active in two motorcycle groups which he started. An "off road" and "on road" group which also took two different kinds of motorcycles. Stan led a group of 10 guys and he never took them on a left hand turn. They may have had to ride miles to get to their destination to avoid this turn! Stan also square danced, ballroom danced and played golf. Stan was the handy-man of the park and all his neighbors and friends came to Stan's shop for tools, parts and help. Stan leaves a wife, Lois, at their Harbor Crest Apartment; a son Robert and wife Lucy in Malabar, Florida; a daughter, Vicki and husband Tim at Farmington, WA. Stan has five grandchildren, 14 great- grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is Stan's sister Mildred and her husband Melvin Derry of Scottsdale, AZ. A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 16, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. at the Harbor Crest Retirement Community Library, 3117 E. Chaser Lane, Spokane, WA, 99223. Memorial gifts may be given to the Harbor Crest Resident Council, c/o Harbor Crest Retirement Community. Urn burial will be at Goldenrod Cemetery in Tekoa at a later date.
