Hazen, MarShalla

75 9/16/1934 1/21/2010 MarShalla Hazen, known to all as
"Mars," died peacefully amongst family at Hopewell House
Hospice, Jan. 21, 2010, from complications due to a stroke at
age 75. Daughter of Louise Richards, Mars was born Sept. 16,
1934, in Phoenix, Ariz. Joining her mother in migration to the
Golden State, she spent her youth and most of her adult life
in the beach communities of Southern California. She
graduated from Garden Grove High School, and attended
Fullerton College. She married Michael Hazen, a member of
the U.S. Marine Corps, Aug. 15, 1964. They recently
celebrated 45 years of marriage. While in California, Mars
developed her skills as an astrologer into more than just a
hobby. Moving to Portland in 1990, she became well
respected within the astrological community. She routinely
provided astrological counseling and was an active member
of the Oregon Astrological Association. Her proudest
achievement came as publisher, editor and contributor to The
Ascendant, a magazine reaching subscribers both nationally
and internationally, providing a unique resource for amateur
and professional astrologers not seen before in the
astrological community. As a writer, cartoonist, puzzle maker
and astrologer, you rarely saw Mars without a pencil or a
mouse in her hand, seeking outlets for her unbounded
intellect and creativity. Always accompanied by her beloved
dogs, Livvie, Jean-Luc or Max, Mars left a legacy of
compassion and kindness for animals. Mars is survived by her
husband, Michael; children, Denise Erickson and Richie
Felker, Tami Hazen and her partner, Jennifer Bush, and Paige
Hazen; grandchildren, Tanya Kern; Jennifer Murphy; Michael,
Jimmy and Krista Perdomo-Hazen; Jasper Erickson; and Jase
Ferris; and one great-grandchild, Grace Perdomo-Hazen. She
is also survived by her siblings, Robert Gamboni, Carol
Palomino and Helen Joseph; and her beloved Bouvier des
Flanders, Max. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11
a.m. Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, in St. Clare Catholic Church. The
family suggests memorial contributions to the Oregon
Humane Society, Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital or
Hopewell House Hospice. Riverview Abbey Funeral Home,
