the Hillsboro community, died Thursday evening, Jan. 7, 2010, at the
Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro. She was surrounded by her
family and friends at her passing. A graveside ser-vice will be held at
11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, 2010, in the Mountain View Memorial
Garden, 499 Watercrest Road in Forest Grove. A remembrance service
will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 2010, in the Hillsboro
Seventh-day Adventist Church, 367 N.E. Grant Street, Hillsboro, with
the Rev. Vio Rosca officiating. Family and friends are invited to attend
a reception immediately following the ceremony, to be held in the
fellowship room of the church. Beverly J. Brewer was born June 21,
1925, in Oakland, Calif., the first child of the late Edward Jenkins and
Marybell (Jasper) Jenkins. She was raised and received her education in
the Oakland community, graduating early and with honors from
Fremont High School and later attending business school. Beverly met
her future husband, James Calvin "Jim" Brewer while he was serving on
the crew of the USS Reno in the U.S. Navy, stationed at Treasure
Island in San Francisco Bay. They met at an amusement park, Playland
at the Beach. They were instantly attracted to each other (Bev says
love at first sight) and soon became engaged to be married. Following
Jim's return on the USS Reno from the South Pacific to dry dock for
repairs to Charleston Shipyard, S.C., Beverly crossed the country by
train and joined him there. They were united in marriage June 11,
1945. Following their marriage they resided in the communities of
Milton-Freewater, LaGrande and Parkrose. They moved to the Hillsboro
community in 1959, where Beverly made her home for over 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jim, June 4, 2006, in
Hillsboro, after celebrating over 60 years of marriage together. Their
relationship was a pure reflection and embodiment of love. She was
also preceded in death by her parents, and two of her three children,
Constance, who died in infancy and Marjorie, who died unexpectedly
Dec. 28, 2001. Beverly had worked as an office manager for Gratteri's
Les Schwab Tire Company in Hillsboro. She worked for the Gratteri
family for 16 years, until she retired in 1981. She was a dedicated and
lifelong member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and was highly
involved in various tasks at the Hillsboro SDA church for 50 years.
She had a number of interests, mostly craft related, and was always
busy with some form of project. Family had always been her main
focus and she was willing to help whenever she could. Beverly was an
active woman to the time of her passing. She lived independently,
picked up her grandson from school several days a week and worked
in her son's office three mornings a week. She always approached life
with a positive and cheerful countenance and volunteered frequently
for projects in the community and in her church. Survivors include her
son, Thomas J. Brewer; and grandson, Calvin A. Brewer of Portland. She
is also survived by her former daughter-in-law, Pamela J. Erno, whom
she considered as her own daughter; sister, Vivian Holman of
Baltimore, Md.; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family
suggests that remembrances may be made to the Worthy Student Fund
of Hillsboro Seventh-day Adventist Church, 367 N.E. Grant St.,
Hillsboro, OR 97124, in her memory. To sign the online guest book or
