Cassidy, Angeline
Angeline (Ann) Cassidy, beloved aunt and friend too many,
passed away quietly at home on Sunday, May 17, after a five-
year battle with cancer.
Ann was born in 1919 to emigrant Greek parents, who arrived
through Ellis Island with just $17, and her mother pregnant
with her older sister; went on to settle in Vandergrift, PA
where Ann and another sister were born. The family soon
returned to New York City, where her father opened up a
barber shop with the family living upstairs, and where Ann
spent her early years. After her high school graduation in
1937, she moved to Southern California where she attended a
small business college.
After attaining a business certificate, she was hired by
Lockheed Aircraft (later Lockheed Missiles and Space
Company), where she met and married Phillip P. Cassidy. The
couple spent 40 years with the company, serving in Southern
California and in the company's Sunnyvale, California offices.
The couple was childless, but in 1950 they officially adopted
Ann's nephew, William H. Williams, whom they raised as their
own.
They both retired from Lockheed in 1986 and in early 1996,
Ann and her husband decided to move to Reno to be close to
Bill and his family, as well as Ann's older sister Eve and Bill's
sister Beverly. They became members of the Senior Auxiliary
Volunteer Effort (S.A.V.E.) in August 1997, where both served
for several years. Ann produced the group's newsletter, Save
Sentinel, until she was sidelined by her illness. For her
volunteer community services, Ann received commendations
from the Reno Police Department, the Washoe County
Sheriff's Office, and the City of Reno and, in 2005; she
received The President's Volunteer Service Award.
Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Phil
Cassidy; sisters, Eve Williams and Helen Heim; nephew, Bill
Williams; and great niece, Sandra Williams.
She is survived by Bill's widow, Lynne; her brother Lewis H.
Zakas; niece Beverly Deversa; great nieces Rhonda Van Allen
(Wallace), Carol Abeloe, and Laura Dulgar (Jim); and great
nephews Dale Williams, Derek Burton, and Michael Abeloe.
The family would like to extend special thanks to Ann's long-
term caregivers Shelby Weatheread, Nicole Thornhill, Victoria
Coleman, and Chelsea, as well as St, Mary's Hospice.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, May 27th at 5:30
pm at Walton Funeral Home, 875 W. 2nd Street, Reno, NV.
