Bowman, John Dieter

67 07/01/1942 05/06/2010 John Dieter Bowman was born July
1, 1942, in Elizabeth, Pa., to Mark and Anna Yarnell Bowman. He
grew up in Pennsylvania and Maryland. In 1969, he married
Sharon "Shari" Downey. He passed away while vacationing with
his wife in Germany. It was his 23rd trip to Europe and reflected
his passion for European travel. John earned a bachelor's degree
in music from Houghton College in New York. His master's
studies at University of North Carolina at Greensboro led
ultimately to his obtaining a Doctor of Musical Arts in choral
conducting from the University of Cincinnati College-
Conservatory of Music. John's teaching career encompassed
Southern Pilgrim College in North Carolina, John Wesley College
of Owosso in Michigan, a full assistantship at the conservatory,
and 27 years at George Fox University in Newberg. He also
served as a minister of music in various denominations during
his entire career. He retired from teaching in 2006. In
retirement, John enjoyed refurbishing homes for rental in
Yamhill County and facilitating travel groups to Europe. His
good company will be missed by his wife, Shari; daughter, Anne
Marie Bracco, and husband, Tony; grandchildren, Gino and Luna;
and brother, Luke (Sheryl). A celebration of life will be held at 3
p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2010, in First Presbyterian Church in
McMinnville where John was most recently the minister of music.
Memorial gifts may be made to the American Diabetes
Association or to the scholarship fund of Friends University
Kaimosi.
