Bernice Ruth Carnes

Was born May 7,1920. Bee as she was affectionately
known, died peacefully on December 7th in Alameda,
close to her son Bruce's home. Originally from Los
Angeles, Bee moved with her parents Herman and Sarah
Lipkin to Oakland where her twin brothers, Herbert
and Norton and Sister Merilyn were born. She
attended Crocker Elementary School, Westlake Junior
High and Oakland Technical High School. She attended
Cal Berkeley and joined a sorority making many
friends. It is fitting that she died on the
anniversary of Pearl Harbor. She had met and married
Charles (Tod) Carnes who was stationed in
California, a long way from his home in Canton,
Ohio. While Tod served in the South Pacific, Bee was
employed in Richmond, one of the "Rosie the
Riveters" she worked at the Standard Oil Refinery in
the Chem. lab. She was preceded in death by her
husband Charles (Tod) Carnes and her brothers Norton
and Herbert Lipkin. She is survived by her 2 sons
Lance and Bruce; 4 grandchildren, 3 boys; Brian
(Erin), Kevin, Timothy and one Granddaughter Morgan
Carnes. Her sister Merilyn Weiss also survives her
along with 2 daughters in Laws Aleda and Cara. Bee
was a very involved person with many interests. She
was a member of the El Cerrito Garden Club, an
investment Club (Tinker bells), The Orchid Society
and the Symphony Guild and Amica (Player Pianos).
Bee loved antiques, classical music, the theater,
gardening, visiting friends and family. Bee will be
buried next to Charles Carnes in a private service
at Golden Gate National Cemetery. A Celebration of
her Life Memorial will be held on January 7th 2010
at The Arlington Clubhouse located in Arlington Park
at 1120 Arlington Blvd, El Cerrito, 94530 from 2-
5pm. The family requests in lieu of flowers that
friends bring a picture and story to share with her
family and friends to celebrate her long and loving
