Childress, Evelyn K.

95 of Phoenix, passed away on September 18, 2009. Evelyn K. Childress, 95, was
born July 16, 1914 in Olyphant, Pennsylvania, and passed away peacefully at home
on September 18, 2009. She was raised by her grandparents in Peckville,
Pennsylvania, along with her sister, two brothers, and four aunts. After high
school, Evelyn moved to New York City and received her nursing degree from Kings
County Hospital in Brooklyn. She took additional classes at Columbia University
and specialized in pulmonary diseases. She began regular train trips back and
forth from New York to Phoenix, transporting and caring for patients with
tuberculosis or emphysema. On one such trip, she met George Childress while they
were horseback riding at South Mountain. They were married in 1938 and lived to
celebrate their 62nd anniversary together. Evelyn was fun loving, adventuresome,
strong, and independent. She loved to read, play card games, go to symphonies,
and fish in Greer. Her true love, however, was celebrating holidays by filling
the house with decorations, music, delicious foods, and gifts. Her generosity
was not only limited to family but extended to the to the community through her
volunteerism and charity work. Evelyn's life was blessed with good friends, fun
family gatherings, and exotic travels. She is survived by her daughters, Judy
(Michael) Walsh and Janet, her son George, her two granddaughters, and her four
great grandchildren. A small family service will be held in celebration of
Evelyn's life. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 1510
E. Flower Street, Phoenix, Arizona.
