Ainslie, Coln 'Coke' Dayle 84 06/05/1925 09/02/2009 Coln passed away at age 84 at Park Forest Care Center in Northeast Portland. He was born in Moscow, Idaho, in 1925 to Wendell and Edna Ainslie. The family moved to Oregon in 1930. In 1943, Coln joined the U.S. Marine Corps. During World War II, he rescued a Marine pilot from a burning plane and received the Navy and Marine Corps medal. He was awarded a Bronze Star medal for heroic achievement in Okinawa, and received a Purple Heart. Although his service resulted in a wounded right arm for the rest of his life, Coke accomplished more with his hands than most. He built stone terrace walls behind his home, made stained glass windows, created oil paintings, had a photography lab, played the organ and wrote compositions for band instruments. He received a Bachelor of Arts from Whitman College and an advanced degree from University of Oregon. He taught fourth and fifth grade for 30 years in Portland Public Schools, as well as summer science classes at OMSI. Coke was preceded in death by his wife of over 50 years, Joyce, who passed away in April 2004. He is survived by his three sons, Richard, Cliff and Russell; daughter-in-law, Barbara; and two grandsons, Paul and Alex. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009, in Gateway Little Chapel of the Chimes, 1515 N.E. 106 Ave., Portland.
