Andrew J. Collins

Moved peacefully from this life on August 13, 2009. Born June 3,
1928 in Tucson, AZ, Andy was raised by his maternal grandmother,
Frances Brazzel in San Francisco's Marina District. Helped by the
nuns at St. Vincent de Paul school, Andy earned an academic
scholarship to St. Ignatius High School (Class of 1945) and then
a basketball scholarship to Santa Clara University (Class of
1951). During college, Andy enlisted in the Army and served
during the Korean conflict. Upon graduation, Andy was drafted by
NBA's Baltimore Bullets, but followed the advice of his coach Bob
Feerick to attend law school. He and Marion J. Gallagher married
in 1952 and Andy completed studies at the University of San
Francisco (JD 1954) before joining the law firm of Sedgwick,
Detert, Moran and Arnold where he had a distinguished career as a
trial lawyer and firm leader. Andy was a 50- year member of the
California State Bar and the Olympic Club. He and Marion had
eight children and 14 grandchildren. Andy will be missed by
family, friends and colleagues. Survived by all of his children
and their spouses: Carolyn Collins and Mark Pallis; Andrew J. and
Somers Collins; Kevin T. Collins; Judy and Blake McDonald; Janet
and Peter Osborne; Joan and Stephen Solari; Jackie and Brad
Krill; and Amy Collins. Andy also leaves behind his beloved
sister and brother-in-law, Pat and Bill Robles and all his
grandchildren. Andy loved his family, sports, traveling, playing
cards, tennis and Scrabble, boating at Lake Tahoe and dancing.
Throughout his life, Andy loved a fair fight and challenged
injustice. Friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on
September 3, at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen Church, 401 Eucalyptus
Drive, San Francisco, CA. Contributions may be made in memory of
Andrew J. Collins to "California Pacific Medical Foundation,
Swindell's Alzheimer's Unit," 3698 California St, San Francisco,
CA 94118.
