James Holbrook Allendoerfer

After a valiant battle with brain cancer, James Allendoerfer
passed away on July 30, 2009, at his home in Mukilteo, Washington
surrounded by family. He was 66.

Jim was born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on March 15, 1943 to Carl
and Dorothy Allendoerfer. When Jim was seven years old the family
moved to Seattle, Washington, where his father took a faculty
position in the mathematics department at the University of
Washington. Jim grew up in the Laurelhurst neighborhood of
Seattle, sailed on Lake Washington, and graduated from Roosevelt
High School in 1960. He earned his BA in economics from Carleton
College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1964 and his JD from the
University of Washington School of Law in 1967.

After law school Jim worked for a year as a law clerk in the
Washington State Supreme Court. Next he headed overseas for a
two-year position as assistant attorney general for the Territory
of Guam. Jim then returned to the Northwest, settling in Everett,
Washington. Jim practiced law in Snohomish, Washington, for close
to 20 years, specializing in land use and municipal law. During
this time he was also the city attorney for Marysville and worked
with the Tulalip Tribe. In 1990 Jim was appointed to the
Snohomish County Superior Court, and he took the bench in January
1991. He retired from this position on July 15, 2009, not because
he was ready for retirement, but because he felt compelled to
step down due to his health.

Jim loved the outdoors, especially the mountains. He was an avid
hiker, leading hikes as a counselor at Camp Parsons, hiking and
camping with his family throughout the Cascade and Olympic
Mountains, climbing Mt. Rainier, and trekking across peaks around
the world. He also enjoyed spending time with his family at their
cabin in the North Cascades. Jim was a lifelong skier, and
greatly enjoyed annual ski trips with a close group of friends.
He was also a world traveler, exploring places such as
Micronesia, Southeast Asia, Japan, Hong Kong, Australia, Nepal,
Peru, Europe, New Zealand, and the Cook Islands.

Jim's integrity and drive to do what was right and make a
difference extended through both his personal and professional
lives. Although he was a teaser and a practical joker, when it
came to important things he was always very thoughtful and
considerate, and true to his word. To the very end, he was
concerned about taking care of his loved ones.

Jim is survived by his wife, Pat; his daughters, Cheryl
Allendoerfer (Karlito Bonnevie) and Barbara Allendoerfer (Jarrod
Kleweno); and granddaughters, Elise Bonnevie and Caitlyn Kleweno,
all of Seattle, WA. He is also greatly missed by his
stepchildren, Vince Tartalia (Katrina), of Southaven, MS and Gina
Tartalia, of Seattle, WA; and step-grandsons, Ryan Koog, Tommy
Tartalia, and Nicolas Tartalia.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, August
28, 2009, at St. Mark's Cathedral, 1245 Tenth Avenue East,
Seattle.

Remembrances may be made to the Swedish Foundation, Center for
Advanced Brain Tumor Treatment, at 747 Broadway, Seattle, WA
98122.
