Longtime Alaskan Donald Wayne Myers, 67, died June 30, 2009, in Odessa, Texas. "He passed from life to glory," his family wrote. A service will be held for Don at 3 p.m. Saturday at South Anchorage Assembly Of God. Close friend and hunting buddy Sid Robertson will officiate. Don was born Oct. 19, 1941, in Tulsa, Okla. Don came to Alaska in 1967 to help rebuild a church that had been damaged in a flood. Like so many others, he fell in love with Alaska and remained for 42 years. Don also fell in love with Linda Nell Moore and they were married Sept. 12, 1986, after a 12-mile hike up Ship Creek in Arctic Valley. Although Don appeared as a physical giant, he was known to have a gentle spirit and a warm heart. His love for Alaska's wilderness and his expertise as a wild game hunter was known by all. He raised horses just to use on his many hunting trips. As a master plumber, Don was employed by Anchorage Water and Wastewater Utility for 27 years. He began in the maintenance department and progressed to a highly regarded inspector. After retiring from AWWU, Don lived his dream by being a big-game hunting guide. Don was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Bonnie; and his brother, Bill. Don leaves behind to miss him deeply his wife, Linda; his sister, Carol Boren of Denton, Texas; his brother, Ron Myers of Arkansas; his daughter, Dona Burgess of Oklahoma; his daughter, Lori Torres of Big Lake; daughter, Georgina Myers of Oklahoma, his stepson Jason Moore and stepdaughter Misti Moore, both of Odessa; and stepdaughter Carla Goodwin of Anchorage. He also leaves to remember him as "grandpa" 24 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association .
