Doris E. WIMPRESS Born on March 9, 1925, in Pasadena, CA., Doris was educated in the schools of Monrovia and Pasadena, receiving an AA degree from Pasadena City College and an RN from the Huntington Memorial Hospital. While there, she met her future husband, John (Jack) Wimpress, a student at nearby Cal Tech. Married in 1949, they moved to Seattle, where Jack worked for the Boeing Co. She worked as an RN at Swedish Hospital before starting their family of four children. Three of the children developed Type 1 diabetes, and Doris managed their care with diligence. Her family was the center of her life, and she expanded it to include foreign exchange students from Australia, Canada, and Taiwan. In 1951, Doris and Jack built their home overlooking Lake Washington, living there for 52 years. Doris was very active in the community, serving as a Campfire Girl leader, bowling in the local league, and managing the decorative landscaping of the main entrance to the community for the Lakeridge Garden Club. For over 20 years she drove cancer patients from all over S.E. King County to their appointments and treatments. She attended regularly the services at Bryn Mawr Methodist Church. Doris was an enthusiastic and easy-going traveler. With young children, the family explored much of the West using their small trailer, and later they made a trip across the entire country. With the children grown, Jack and Doris visited every continent, including Antarctica. Unusual trips included touring the Galapagos Islands, running the rapids of the Grand Canyon, crossing the Atlantic on the QE-2 and returning on the Concorde, visiting a former exchange student in Tasmania, flying by light plane into many spots in Mexico, and cruising by sailboat from Olympia to Desolation Sound. She was a snow and water skier into her 70's, and continued hiking throughout her life. Doris died on August 3rd , 2009. She leaves a loving family including her husband of 60 years, four children, nine grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, along with associated spouses. A Memorial Service will be held August 18 at 11:30 AM at the Bryn Mawr Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to The American Diabetes Association , The American Cancer Society , or Franciscan Hospice. Published in The Seattle Times on August 9, 2009
