Andrew (Andy) L. BARONE

8/13/1930 ~ 7/20/2009 A resident of the San Francisco Bay Area,
Andy attended the local schools where he graduated from Balboa
High School and San Francisco Junior College. He volunteered for
service in the US Army. Having shown a potential for leadership,
he was chosen to attend OCS Engineer School at Fort Belvoir,
Virginia. Following graduation and a short assignment in the US,
he was assigned to an Engineer Aviation Battalion in Korea as a
part of the Special Category Army with Air Force (SCARWAF). Andy
returned to California in 1953. Upon release from active duty, he
attended Healds Engineering College where he majored in
Architectural Engineering. About this time he met and married
Patricia Casey. In 1954 he took employment with Union Oil of
California in the Engineering Department as an architectural
draftsman. He remained with Unocal for the next 30 plus years in
various positions with the Engineering, Maintenance and
Construction Departments; and, retired from UNOCO as Northwest
Division Environmental Engineer in 1992. He continued his
engineering talents with Charles Gove & Associates for several
years before finally retiring. Having fallen in love with the sea
as a teenager in the Sea Scouts in San Francisco, as soon as
UNOCO transferred him to Seattle, he started looking for a
sailboat. Having owned several small day sailors in the Bay Area,
he graduated to the Baroness, a Coronado 25 and joined the
Edmonds Yacht Club. With a growing family and his sights set on
longer cruising, he traded the Baroness for a Columbia 30,
Stormalong. He led his family into active sailing in the area
where they were named Boating Family of the Year in 1978. Andy
was elected Commodore of the Edmonds Yacht Club in 1980. He led
his family on sailing vacations north to Desolation Sound and
west to Barkley Sound and finally a trip around Vancouver Island.
In the meantime, he sailed the Straits of Georgia and Swiftsure
races several times with fellow Edmonds sailors. Looking farther
afield, he went sailing several times in the Caribbean and the
Aegean Sea. A natural born builder, Andy designed or directed
remodels on his children's homes. In his later years, he directed
some of his energy to gardening in his home in Bear Creek. Andy
is survived by his wife of 56 years, Patricia and his children
Carol Greetan (Wallace), Arlene Buetow (Bayard), Ellen Schoonover
(Jeff), David Barone (Theresa) and Sheila Barone as well as
grandchildren and great grandchildren. The family would like to
express their appreciation to his Bear Creek neighbors and the

and support. Visitation will be on Monday, August 3 from 4 to
