Former Anchorage and Homer resident Rose Katherine "Kay" Kogele,

79, died March 24, 2009, in Payson, Ariz. A celebration of life
will be at 6 p.m. Saturday on the beach at Kay's favorite camping
spot on the Homer Spit. A gathering will be afterward at Don
Jose's in downtown Homer. Kay was born at home Feb. 10, 1930, in
Paris, Ariz., to Emmery Clay and Minnie Bowers. She moved to
Alaska from California in 1968. She worked for the Brown Jug for
many years, until she retired. About then, she met the "other
love of her life," Otto. They married on Nov. 24, 1979. In 1985,
they moved to Payson. Her family wrote: "She loved to spend her
summers traveling with Otto to Alaska, spending time between
Anchorage and Homer, but more in Homer. As we all know, other
than Otto, Kay's best love was fishing, and she was good at it.
She once said that she would 'rather fish than eat, and we love
to eat.' Kay was truly a 'girlie girl'; she loved makeup, nice
jewelry, perfume, and anything with 'bling.' Even when she was
fishing she had her eyebrows and her lips on! Gotta love her for
that!" She is survived by her husband, Otto of Arizona;
grandchildren, Ginger and Millie; great-grandchildren, Misha,
Katie and Rae; brother, Ralph Houston Bowers of Alaska; and
sisters, Melba Ruth Dickerson of California, Nancy Ann Parnell of
Kentucky and Mertha Algerit Warwick of California. Mrs. Kogele
was preceded in death by her children, Gloria Jean and Jerry
Doyle; and brothers, Charles Author Bowers and Sammy Walter
Bowers.
