Jr., Melvin Christopher Manley

85 09/29/1923 06/05/2009 Melvin C. Manley Jr. died June 5, 2009, in Beaverton. He
was 85. The son of Melvin Sr. and Thelma (Foster) Manley, Mr. Manley was born Sept.
29, 1923, in Six Mile Run, Pa. In 1946, Mel married his childhood sweetheart, Gloria
Louise Warsing, in Winchester, Va. Louise died in 2001. He is survived by three
children, Glenn Manley, Kim Manley and Kevin Manley; four grandchildren; and 11
nieces and nephews. The last surviving member of his family, he was preceded in
death by his parents; sisters, Amelia and Anna Grace; and brother, Jerry. Mel was a
member of Christ United Methodist Church in Cedar Mill. He was also a member of
Masonic Lodge #272 in Butler, Pa., Scottish Rite and Al Kader Shrine. Mel graduated
from Broad Top Township High School in Pennsylvania and later attended Rutgers
University and Dickinson Law School. He was employed by Nationwide Insurance for
35 years. Extremely proud of his service in World War II, Mel served with the 17th
Airborne Division in the European theater of operations, participating in the Continental
Campaign, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Rhine Crossing. He was awarded the
American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with
three Bronze Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead, the World War II Victory Medal, and
the Good Conduct Medal. He participated in the World War II Victory Parade in New
York City. Funeral services will be in Akers Funeral Home, Everett, Pa., with interment
in Duvall Cemetery in Six Mile Run. A memorial service will be planned for July at his
local church in Oregon.
