Callanan, Fr. Edward E. S.J.,

Pastor at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Phoenix from 1990 to 2002, died at age 81 at
Sacred Heart Jesuit Center, Los Gatos, CA, on June 10, 2009. Ed was born in Los
Angeles on January 25, 1928, the fifth of seven children of Howard and Anna
Callanan. He attended Loyola High School in Los Angeles where he was an
outstanding athlete in football and track. He continued his football career for one year
at the University of Southern California before entering the Jesuit novitiate at Los Gatos
in 1945. He was ordained a priest at Blessed Sacrament Church, Hollywood, in 1958.
As a priest, Ed served in two main areas: high schools and parishes. He served at
Brophy College Preparatory, Phoenix, from 1961 to 1967, as Vice-Principal and
Principal; then, at Jesuit High School, Sacramento, from 1967 to 1984, as Principal and
Director of Development. Since 2003 he has been serving at Jesuit High School,
Sacramento, as Assistant to the President for Community Relations. In parish work, Ed
served at St. Francis Xavier Parish, Phoenix, from 1984 to 1986, as Associate Pastor;
at Blessed Sacrament Parish, Hollywood, from 1986 to 1990, as Pastor; and again at
St. Francis Xavier Parish, Phoenix, from 1990 to 2002, as Pastor. Ed was blessed with
a very warm and gregarious personality which served his priestly, pastoral ministry
wonderfully, a beautiful combination of nature and grace. He loved being with people in
all the circumstances of their lives, whether the occasion was a sacramental
celebration of a significant life event or simply a celebration of life. An avid USC fan, he
was a great one for organizing trips to various USC games and functions. Ed was also
a consummate straight talker. No one ever had to guess what was on his mind. This
trait, coupled with a hearty laugh, put people at ease to be themselves in his presence.
Most of all, Ed was a man of deep faith in God's abiding presence among people, and
he used all of life's circumstances as a context to celebrate that presence. He will be
greatly missed. He is survived by his sister, Maryanne McNamara, of Corona Del Mar,
and his brother, John, of San Clemente. At St. Ignatius Church, Sacramento, there will
be a Vigil on Tuesday, June 16th, at 7:00 PM, and a Mass of Christian Burial on
Wednesday, June 17th , at 1:00 PM, followed by a reception. Internment will be
private. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Xavier Church on Monday,
June 15th, at 5:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Capital
Campaign for St. Francis Xavier School and Parish, 4715 N. Central Ave., Phoenix, AZ
85012.
