Shaver, Katherine Sigourney
83 12/27/1925 05/26/2009 Katherine Sigourney Shaver was born in Hamilton,
Bermuda, on Dec. 27, 1925, and died in Portland on May 26, 2009. She grew up in
Worcester and Princeton, Mass. She attended Bennington College in Vermont. During
World War II she married Leonard R. Shaver Jr. of Portland during his service as an
officer in the U.S. Navy. After the war Kitty and Leonard settled in Portland, where he
died in 1958. She was active in the Portland Civic Theatre and in the Junior League of
Portland. Following Leonard's death she was first a research assistant at Reed College
and then for many years the coordinator of volunteers at the Oregon Historical Society.
Katherine is survived by her brother, Andrew Sigourney of Nahant, Mass.; and sisters,
Suzanne S. Vik of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Carolyn S. Holtz of Portland. A memorial
gathering of family and friends will be scheduled later for the coming summer season.
The family suggests that remembrances may be directed to the Oregon Historical
Society or Hospice of Oregon.
