| Green, William Henry 91 03/31/1917 03/15/2009 William Green, a longtime resident of Portland, and recently Vancouver, lost his battle with cancer and passed away on March 15, 2009. Bill was born on March 31, 1917, in Pittsburgh. He was the youngest of four children of William and Hettie Green, having three older sisters. He attended public schools in Pittsburgh and Penn State University in State College, Pa., where he received his undergraduate degree. On July 4, 1941, Bill married his college sweetheart, Mary Jane Kistler. Soon after, he entered the U.S. Army and served overseas during World War II in Africa and Italy with the U.S. Army Medical Corps. After the war, Bill and Jane lived in Detroit, Mich., where he worked for Bendix-Westinghouse. In 1950, they moved to Portland where he was employed by Roberts Motors and later by Peerless Trailer/Royal Industries. Bill and Jane had four children, John of Billings, Mont.; Jan of Spring Creek, Nev.; Bob of Vancouver; and Tom of Chula Vista, Calif. Bill loved golf, and for many years he and Jane were members of Riverside Golf and Country Club. He had a regular group of dear friends with whom he enjoyed playing. It was often followed by dinner and a friendly game of gin rummy. Bill also loved a good joke and had plenty to tell. They often included a golfer or two. During Bill's golfing "career," he had six holes-in-one and one double eagle of which he was very proud. Bill and Jane enjoyed spending their winters in Indio, Calif., where Bill played golf almost every day. He also liked to play volleyball and ride his bike around the mobile park and visit with good friends. Bill is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Jane of Vancouver; son, John (Stacy) and granddaughters, Kristi and Malia; daughter, Jan (Larry) and grandchildren, Shannon and Bret; son, Bob (Deane) and grandchildren, Jennifer, Bryan and Melanie; son, Tom (Trish) and granddaughter, Sierra; and nine great-grandchildren. There will be an informal gathering of family and friends to celebrate Bill's life from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 2, 2009, in the Summerplace Clubhouse, 2020 N.E. 150th Ave., Portland. The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to all the staff at The Ashley Inn in Vancouver for their love and compassion for Bill in his final months. They were truly his angels.
