John L. HANCOCK

1/23/30 ~ 12/7/08 Born in St. Louis, John Loretz Hancock graduated from Hall High
School in West Hartford, Connecticut. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps and fought
in the Korean War, D 2/1 1951-52. After the war John married Joanne Johnson, the
mother of their children Manjit (nee Martha), Joseph, Karen, and Steve. John attended
the University of Minnesota (BA cum laude 1954, MA 1955), and began his teaching
career as an instructor in English and American studies at the University of Colorado
1955-57. He received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964, and taught
urban planning history at the University of North Dakota 1962-67 and the University of
Kansas 1967-69 before joining the faculty at the University of Washington Department
of Urban Planning, where he rose to the rank of Professor, becoming Professor
Emeritus in 1998. In 1975, John married Marga Rosencranz. With Marga, other family
members, and on his own, John traveled and taught on 6 continents. John and Marga
shared the observance of Thanksgiving 2008 with all four of his children and his
granddaughter Simranjit, at Evergreen Hospice Center. He died within a circle of care
on Pearl Harbor Day, a moment in history 57 years before that mobilized commitment to
patriotic duty in many Americans, including John. Family & Friends of John Hancock will
