TURTON, Virginia
Nov 28, 1920 - Nov 9, 2008
Virginia Turton, one of seven children, was born in Pittsburgh, to John E. Hinish Sr. and
Mary Foy Hinish. She graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School in 1939 and
completed nurse's training at Shadyside Hospital in 1942, earning her R.N. certification.
Virginia served her country as a second lieutenant nurse in the army during World War
II. After the war, she married Charles D. Turton and moved to California. She raised her
two children, Margaret and Chuck Jr., while working full-time as a surgical nurse and an
operating room supervisor.
Virginia moved to Oregon in 1980, after the death of her husband. She spent much of
her time cheering on her three grandchildren in all their various athletic endeavors and
other activities. Never missing a game, she was their number one fan and everyone
knew it. She was a constant source of inspiration and wise practical advice.
Virginia will be remembered as a proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother
who was devoted to her family. Preceded in death by her husband and son, Virginia is
survived by her daughter, Margaret Winthrop, and husband, Loring of Salem;
grandsons, Kevin Winthrop, and wife, Anne, and their children, Claire, Bridget and
Nolan of Portland; Matthew Winthrop, and fiancée, Aryn of Portland; and
granddaughter, Amy Winthrop Marcus, and husband, Scott, and their daughter, Lena
of San Francisco.
Contributions in remembrance may be made to the Charles D. Turton Jr. Memorial
Scholarship at the University of California at Berkeley, 2080 Addison Street, Berkeley,
CA 94720.
