Gutman, Mary M. Mary M. Gutman age 89, of Tucson, AZ, died Saturday, April 3, 2010 with her daughter and faithful cat by her side. Mary was born May 17, 1920, in New York and baptized in the Greek Orthodox Church. She attended PS71 in addition to Greek School, where she learned to read and write Greek, and graduated from Washington Irving High School, New York City and Pratt Institute for Design, Brooklyn, New York. She joined the military at age 22 and proudly served as link trainer instructor during WWII as part of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corp (WAAC). Mary flew an ATC6 and often said she enjoyed flying more than anything. In 1976, Mary came to Arizona with her husband, John. She was an active member of St. Michael's and All Angels Church, Tucson. A supportive mother and grandmother as well as a career woman, Mary retired from JC Penney in 1985. She was an accomplished seamstress and artist. Mary is survived by her daughter, Kathy-Jeane (Jon) Hurst of Tucson, AZ; sons, Ted (Nancy) Gutman of Burlington, IA and Stephen Gutman, Tucson, AZ; eight grandchildren, ten great- grandchildren, a sister, Katherine Cressent of Hartsdale, NY and her beloved cat Sam. She is predeceased by her parents, Sophocles and Margaret Moscou; sisters, Helen and Stella and husband, John B. Gutman. An interment of Mary's ashes and Celebration of her life will be held Thursday, May 13, 2010 at 11:00 a.m., St. Michael's Church, Tucson, Arizona. The family wishes to express special thanks to the staff at Woodland Palms and the amazing people of Valor Hospice.
