Chesterman, Shirley Singer

Shirley Chesterman 1935-2010 Shirley Chesterman (ne
Singer) passed away on Sunday, March 28, 2010, in Santa
Rosa, CA, after a long illness. Shirley was born in San
Diego, CA on July 9, 1935, to Oliver Bell Singer of
Yoakum, TX, and Ada Annie White of London, England.
She was the youngest of their three children. She grew
up in San Bruno and graduated from San Mateo High
School. She was elected Honored Queen of Jobs
Daughters. She received her nursing degree from the Mt.
Zion Hospital School of Nurses in San Francisco, CA. She
earned her bachelor's degree in nursing from Stanford
University and her master's degree from Western New
Mexico University. Throughout her health care career of
almost 50 years, Shirley was a passionate advocate for
her patients and their well-being. She worked in
intensive care, coronary care, public health, home health
and hospice, in a variety of hospital and clinical settings.
She held leadership positions at various institutions,
such as Director of Nursing at Gila Regional Medical
Center in Silver City, NM, Regional Director of Hospice
Training for Nevada County and Director of In-service at
Tahoe Forest Hospital in Truckee, CA, Director of Upjohn
Home Health Care Services in Reno, NV, Supervisor at
Sparks Family Hospital in Sparks, NV, and was the
founding Director of Nursing at Hearthstone of Northern
Nevada. Shirley married the Very Reverend Thomas C.
Chesterman, Jr. on June 28, 1958, at Grace Cathedral in
San Francisco. They have three children; Thomas C.
Chesterman III, Timothy Hannes Chesterman, and Tia
Wilcox. Their family grew with the additions of daughter-
in-law Beth, son-in-law Trevor, and four grandchildren,
Christian, Tabitha, Noah and Timmy, as well as a wide
circle of extended family and friends. Shirley
demonstrated an even more developed passionate
advocacy for her family members, had a love of history,
antiquities and travel, and a dramatic flair for adventure.
She participated in husband Tom's ministry, which took
them to much of Europe, Santo Domingo, Dominican
Republic, and Cuernavaca, Mexico, as well as Chinatown
San Francisco and Truckee, CA. Shirley battled diabetic
complications in her later years, and more recently
struggled with mobility issues after a failed back surgery
in 2002. Despite these limitations, she lived a very full
and enthusiastic life, infusing her spirit into those who
were fortunate to know her. In her ever-changing and
eventful life, Shirley was especially blessed with the
constant support and companionship of husband Tom.
Their 51 years of marriage has been an example of
strength and devotion to their children and
grandchildren. A memorial service and Holy Eucharist is
scheduled for Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. at
Grace Cathedral, San Francisco. A special service will
also be scheduled at Sonoma Developmental Center in
Eldridge, California. In lieu of flowers, Shirley's family
would like to request that you make a donation to the
Parent Hospital Association of Sonoma Developmental
Center (PO Box 237, Eldridge, CA 95431) in her name.
