Asbury, Raymond C.

ASBURY, RAYMOND CHARLES Raymond was born in San Diego on January
31, 1930 to Vernon and Elizabeth Asbury. He passed away
peacefully on September 20, 2011, with his family at his side.
He was preceded in death by his son, Mitchell Alan Asbury. Ray
was the sixth of seven siblings. He attended San Diego High
School and graduated in 1949. He was on the football team and
was named to the first team of the 1948 Breitbard Athletic
Foundation Award All Coast League. He also was on the wrestling
team. Ray went into the U.S. Army in 1950 and served in Korea as
an M.P. He was a guard at the peace talks there. When he was
discharged he attended San Diego Community College for a while.
In 1954, he met and married Joye Patton. They were married for
almost 57 years. They had five children.He went to work at
Palomar Foods as a driver/salesman. The job evolved into advance
sales. He sold to restaurants, schools, and institutions. His
last 15 years as a working man was delivering liquor for
Bohemian Distributing Co. He retired in 1992 and devoted the
rest of his life to bow hunting, which he dearly loved, and
fishing. He hunted in Wyoming, South Dakota, Texas, Colorado,
Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. He wasn't always successful but he
did hang heads on the walls of his home of deer, antelope, elk,
and wild pig. But not in the living room. He liked deep sea
fishing but his favorite was surf fishing. He fashioned a cart
with big wheels that would go on the sand to hold his poles,
gear and beer or coffee, depending on what time of day it was.
He is survived by four of his five children, Daniel Asbury of
Imperial Beach, Sharon Halstead (Guil) of Temecula, John Asbury
(Cynthia) of Escondido, Mary Beth Shipman (Tim) of San Diego and
daughter-in-law, Karen Asbury of Chesapeake, VA; eleven
grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Memorial mass will
be at 1 p.m. on October 14th at Our Lady of Grace Catholic
Church, 2766 Navajo Road, El Cajon. Private interment at Fort
Rosecrans National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be
made to the Alzheimer's Association , 6632 Convoy Ct., San
Diego, CA 92111.
