Micenko, William M.

William Mason Micenko William Mason Micenko was born January 9,
1939 in Donora, PA to Helen Mason Micenko and John Micenko.
William passed away September 17, 2011 following a long
hospitalization. Survived by wife Sharon Andrus-Micenko and sons
Gregg and Paul Micenko, grandchildren Jennifer Hemmings, Ryan
Micenko, Elizabeth Micenko, Andrew Micenko, and Dani Micenko,
great-grandchildren Ezra Hemmings, Devon Micenko, Haley Micenko
and Asher Micenko, all of Washington State, son Scott Micenko,
sister Florence McPartland, and brother John Owen Micenko of
Donora, Pennsylvania. At 16 he was Pipe Major of Clan Grant Pipe
Band of Donora, located in western Pennsylvania, where he was
born and raised. He also played lead trumpet in the Donora High
School Band. In 1957 he passed his audition for the Air Force
Bagpipe Band in Washington, D.C., and played with it until late
1961. With the band he toured Europe twice and almost every
state, playing for all types of functions, both military and
civilian! Played the pipes for President JFK of the United
States, and while in England he played for the Queen of England
at their request. William stayed in the Air Force for another
five years. In 1962 and part of 1963 he was attached to the
weather station at Fort Lewis. He worked for Tacoma Public
Utilities as a Line Materials man, retiring after 27 years.
William worked for Annie Wright School as Transportation Manager
for 12 years until retirement in Dec. 2010. William created the
Tacoma Scots Bag Pipe Band in 1972, and was the Pipe Major until
2009. Tacoma Scots Bag Pipe Band was designated Pierce County
Sheriffs Pipe Band in 2001. William was one of the founders of
the Tacoma Highland Games and Tacoma Scots Burns Night. William
Mason Micenko was honored as Chieftain of the Day, Seattle
Highland Games, 1994. William Mason Micenko was honored as
Chieftain of the Day, Tacoma Highland Games, 1993 Life member of
the Donora, PA Elks. One of the founding members of the Tacoma
Alba Mason's Lodge, Tacoma. He was preceded in death by his
father on December 21, 2003, and mother in November 2006.
Funeral services will be held at 1pm on October 3, 2011 at
Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, WA. His memorial service will
be held Noon to 3pm October 8, 2011 at Annie Wright School.
