| Cavagnaro, Walter J. Walter John Cavagnaro Resident of Burlingame Passed away peacefully at home on July 18, 2011 after a long illness at age 85. Walter was born on August 16, 1925, the son of Edmund and Lillie Cruchoff Cavagnaro of Daly City. He graduated from Jefferson High School and from the Naval V-12 program of Marquette University where he earned a degree in engineering. He served on active duty with the Navy during the Korean War as an officer on the USS Rogers and later served as a Commander in the Naval Reserve. He started his career as an engineer for PG&E and then joined the California Public Utilities Commission from which he retired as Chief Engineer after more than 25 years of service. He devoted time after his retirement to tutoring students at Burlingame High School and as a volunteer at Samaritan House. He was a member of St. Dunstan's and Our Lady of Angels parishes. He is survived by his beloved wife of almost 62 years, Loretta Monahan Cavagnaro from Chicago. He is also survived by his son Francis (Nancy Brewer) and grandson John, by his son Ed (Barbara Goode) and granddaughter Elizabeth, by his daughter Mary (Bev Parrish), and by his daughter Jane Unger (Joe Nezwek) and granddaughters Erinn and Claire. He was predeceased by his dear grandson, Matthew, the son of Ed and Barbara, his cherished sister, Lillian Wright, and son-in-law Tim Unger (Jane). Walter enjoyed golf, the Giants, 49ers, and Cal and Stanford athletics. He and Loretta loved dinner bridge parties, the San Francisco Ballet and Symphony, and especially travel around the United States and the world. He was devoted to his extended family. He was a wonderful son, brother, husband, father, uncle, father-in-law, grandfather and friend. He will be remembered for his warmth and kindness and will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Samaritan House of San Mateo or the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. A memorial service will be held on Sunday August 28 at 3:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Angels Church in Burlingame. Published in San Francisco Chronicle on August 21, 2011 |
