Cobarrubias, Gloria Jane

Nov. 17, 1924 to August 20, 2010 Gloria Jane Cobarrubias, 85,
died peacefully surrounded by the love of her family on August
20, 2010 in San Diego, California. She was a beloved mother
and grandmother and she will be missed by her family and
many friends who stood bravely by her side through several
medical challenges presented her throughout her life. Gloria was
the oldest daughter born to Effie Jane and William Slack in Chula
Vista. Gloria began her career as a statistician for Dr. Russell
Raitt at Scripps Institute of Oceanography and their work
contributed to ocean bottom surveying from 1946 - 1964. She
went to school at San Diego State and completed her studies in
advanced calculus and statistics. She married Joseph William
Cobarrubias in 1964 and they raised two daughters, Marta and
Susan, in the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles. After the
conclusion of seventeen years of marriage, Gloria moved back
to La Jolla in 1984. She rediscovered her love for singing opera
with the assistance of her teacher and dear friend, Rhoda Gaylis.
She enjoyed singing in recitals and ceremonies for friends. Her
life ran full circle returning to San Diego, as she was happiest
closest to the ocean. Gloria will be missed by her friends at the
University City United Church, as so many reached out to her in
times of need. Gloria is survived by her daughters, Susan Jane
Pinkston and Marta Donovan (husband Scott Donovan); and
grandsons, Grant and Ryan Donovan. A celebration of her life
will be held at University City United Church, 2877 Governor
Drive, San Diego on Saturday, September 4th, at 2:00 p.m. In
lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the San Diego
Opera or to University City United Church.
